Chester welcomes the colour purple

Chester welcomes the colour purple

CH1ChesterBID, the business improvement district for Chester, is providing the city with over 120 purple-themed flower towers, barrier baskets and lamp post displays as it competes in North West in Bloom this summer. The purple theme was chosen to represent Chester’s new status as a Purple Flag city, which means it has been recognised for its flourishing night time economy which provides a diverse choice of evening entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

A riot of colour in self-watering planters

At Amberol we are happy to supply Chester with our self-watering planters for the mauve, lilac, violet and lavender-hued floral displays that are making this ancient city come alive in a riot of colour this summer. Fuchsias, petunias, begonias and bacopas have all been used in the floral displays that are located in the central and atmospheric Frodsham Street, Foregate Street and Grosvenor Street areas.

Business in Bloom

CH1ChesterBID is one of many BID organisations across the UK to get involved in Britain in Bloom. BIDs are not-for-profit organisations formed by business rate payers who work collectively to invest in local improvements to enhance the visitor experience and attract more investment. The Chester in Bloom project has benefited from help from staff from McDonalds and Wilko’s who volunteered to take part in the planting for Foregate Street, while independent local businesses paid for hanging baskets to further enhance the purple floral theme throughout the city. Now the floral displays are in place, landscapers from Cheshire West and Cheshire Council will ensure they are in the best possible shape for the all-important visit from the North West in Bloom judges.

Community involvement in action

As anyone with an interest in Britain in Bloom knows, horticultural expertise is only part of the competition’s ethos. Equal importance is given to engaging the whole community in gardening projects to educate and inspire them when it comes to improving the appearance of the community while taking issues of biodiversity and climate change into account. With this in mind, businesses will be collaborating to provide a children’s nature trail through the city centre. Gardening sessions in the enviable setting of the  grounds of Chester Cathedral are also planned.
