The BBC has broadcast coverage of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for many years and has now announced a new four-year contract that will see this coverage continue until the end of 2021.
The Chelsea Flower Show is Britain’s most prestigious garden show and a fount of ideas and inspiration for councils, Britain in Bloom groups, horticulturalists and landscapers across the UK and even the world.
The new deal between the BBC and the Royal Horticultural Society also includes the broadcasting of other RHS events such as the Malvern Spring Festival, Chatsworth Flower Show and Britain in Bloom.
From 2018, Britain in Bloom will have its own TV series that will follow communities in their preparation for the judges’ visit. Each episode will see the presenter Chris Bavin, visit a different community around the UK, from the smallest villages to the biggest cities.
With plenty of happenings and drama in the campaign that is over 50 years old, we’re sure that the series will be a popular one – maybe in a similar fashion to the Great British Bake Off. The show will air on BBC Two at 6:30pm and will follow the competition up until the Britain in Bloom Awards show.
We can’t wait for the show to begin; it will bring the campaign into people’s living rooms and hopefully get people involved who weren’t previously familiar with Britain in Bloom. It will also give councils and communities participating in the campaign a greater insight into what other groups are doing and how they can improve their own application.
“We are thrilled to have extended our partnership with the BBC across all its platforms until 2021 and are so excited about the increased opportunities presented by the BBC’s expanded coverage of our work, which includes a new TV series on our flagship Britain in Bloom campaign,” says Sue Biggs, RHS Director General.
At Amberol, we are also looking forward to seeing our self-watering planters, outdoor furniture and litter bins that are used in so many Britain in Bloom entries on the big screen!
