While our customers in the UK may not be familiar with the Tidy Towns competition, it is a major event for many of our customers in Ireland. Now in its 58th year, the annual competition is a popular community based initiative, designed to encourage people to take care of where they live.
Entrants are judged on eight criteria, including the quality of the built environment and streetscape, sustainable waste and resource management, and residential streets and housing areas.
Just like Britain in Bloom, Tidy Towns involves people from all walks of life as well as councils, businesses and other organisations. It has also helped transform villages, towns and cities across Ireland for the better, developing a strong sense of community.
At Amberol, we work with many Tidy Town groups to support them in their entry and our self-watering planters are popular with customers and judges alike. In fact, we were delighted to receive some positive feedback recently from the Tidy Towns judges’ adjudication report for Castleconnell in County Limerick. The judges were highly appreciative of the environmental credentials of Castleconnell’s Amberol self-watering planters saying: “The self watering ‘cup and saucer' solution to the problem of water wastage and hanging baskets is a touch of genius!”
We believe that our self-watering containers offer an environmentally friendly, robust and affordable solution for councils, community groups and businesses so we were delighted to have that formally recognised by the Tidy Town judges.
And let’s not forget the importance of keeping the streets clean and litter free – something that Tidy Towns is keen to promote. Some groups use our litter bins, which range from animal shaped bins (who can also talk with the simple addition of a sound card), to our popular recycling bins, to our range of outdoor bins. Customers report that their Amberol bins are an important part of developing an effective litter strategy.

Have you visited the Amberol website recently? If not, now would be a good time to take a fresh look as we are delighted to announce some changes. In fact, the whole website has had a bit of an exciting makeover to mark the start of a new decade.
With the Great British Spring Clean 2020 officially launched in January, momentum for the annual initiative is starting to build. This year’s event runs from 20th March to 13th April and the aim is to make the 2020 campaign even bigger and better. In 2019, over half a million volunteers were involved in everything from litter picks to individual litter pledges. This year the campaign’s target is to involve at least 600,000 people.
One of the many advantages of using containers for planting rather than traditional flower beds is the versatility that containers can offer. Planters can be relocated with relative ease to enhance a specific space or fit in with a particular theme, offering great potential for the imaginative Britain in Bloomer, horticulturalist or gardener.
