Glastonbury in Bloom is named national ‘Town Category’ finalist in the RHS Britain in Bloom competition taking place this summer.
Glastonbury in Bloom has a lot of history, set-up over 25 years ago by the late Freeman and previous Mayor Alan Gloak MBE. Over the last seven years, the group has grown considerably and is now being recognised for their efforts in the Britain in Bloom competitions regionally and nationally.
Glastonbury in Bloom won three prestigious trophies at the South West in Bloom competition in 2023 for their incredible effort to brighten up their town with beautiful floral displays from May to October. They won the prestigious Preece Cup for the ‘Population Category’, the Abbiss Cup for ‘Best Horticultural Display’ on a Municipal building (Glastonbury Town Hall) and the Sargent Trophy for outstanding effort and contribution from a main competition entry.
2023 was their best ever year in terms of accolades and this year is set to be even better, after Glastonbury in Bloom was named a RHS Britain in Bloom finalist in the ‘Town Category’. They are busy planning and planting their summer displays ready to impress the judges this summer on their commitment to improving the local environment, community engagement and horticulture excellence. The colour scheme for this year is to reflect the Town Council crest – blues, golds, yellows, whites and silvers to commemorate 50 years since the Town Council was created. In addition, they are dedicating their Britain in Bloom entry in memory of the late Alan Gloak MBE who started “Glastonbury in Bloom” and sadly passed away on 29 December 2023.
Glastonbury in Bloom has been using Amberol’s self-watering planters for their floral displays over the last few years to conserve water more sustainably.
Sarah Marks, Glastonbury in Bloom Committee Clerk said:
“We have been using Amberol’s self-watering hanging baskets along the main high street and town hall area. The self-watering feature has been great because shop owners are happy that they don’t drip over their shop windows or their customers and the plants have lasted a lot longer than the original wired baskets we had. The hanging baskets are doing very well, considering that some are in a sun spot all day. This will be our 4/5th year of using them.”
They have also been using Amberol’s self-watering barrel planters for larger displays, as well as ordering some new two-tier barrel planters for this summer. They plant all types of flowers and shrubs in their planters, with more permanent planting planned for the barrels.
Sarah Marks, Glastonbury in Bloom Committee Clerk said:
“The Amberol barrels were placed on the main road towards the Tor and Chalice Well, both main tourist places in Glastonbury and a main route to the Glastonbury Festival. The barrels we have brought will be looked after by the residents of the road. The barrels have been a big feature. The new two-tier barrels will be placed by a school and looked after by the local school children."
This year is Britain in Bloom’s 60th anniversary, and the theme of friendship has been chosen “to highlight the way in which community gardening can bring people together and enrich lives”. Glastonbury in Bloom always welcome new volunteers to help prepare and maintain their floral displays.
