What will you do to keep Britain tidy?

The Great British Spring Clean is now in its 8th year, and is going from strength to strength. The annual campaign, which is organised by Keep Britain Tidy, is taking place between 17th March and 2nd April this year - and it looks set to be bigger than ever.

What is the Great British Spring Clean?

The Great British Spring Clean (GBSC) is the UK’s largest and arguably most high-profile mass action environmental campaign. One of the key messages of the scheme is the importance of working together to tackle litter, which blights many of our civic centres, roadsides and countryside, as well as costing millions of pounds of local authority funds to clear up.

As part of the campaign, community groups, schools, businesses and members of the public set up litter picks across the UK. Participants are asked to pledge to collect bags of litter as part of the #BigBagChallenge. Just under half a million bags were collected during the 2022 event – an amazing achievement.

Working hard to raise awareness

Of course, an important part of any litter strategy should be educating people to dispose of their litter responsibly, as well as providing appropriate litter collection resources. The GBSC campaign also does much to raise awareness of the issue of littering and the role we can all play in keeping our environment cleaner and tidier.

The Great British Spring Clean has evolved from events such as the first National Spring Clean day which was held in 1989 with the help of the popular fictional characters of the Wombles - known for cleaning up Wimbledon Common. Since then, Keep Britain Tidy has run many different litter campaigns with the Great British Spring Clean being its most well-known event.
