Amberol and Topiary Art Designs – where artistry and floristry combine

Amberol and Topiary Art Designs – where artistry and floristry combine

Topiary Art Designs make bespoke feature topiaries, willow and wicker sculptures and replica plant or artificial topiary sculptures which are in demand both in the UK and across the world. Owner and artist Steve Manning also makes stainless steel topiary frames in any design. In addition, the company offers a topiary shaping service and topiary plant sales from its Suffolk-based nursery.

Steve was working with Nottingham City Council when he first heard about Amberol’s self-watering planters. The council’s gardening maintenance team was already familiar with Amberol’s products having used them around the city for many years, and so recommended their planters for the floral trail that was being created. As part of the trail, Topiary Art Designs created a range of willow sculptures with floral displays which linked Nottingham’s main shopping areas. The aim of the project was to encourage visitors into the city centre.

Amberol’s self-watering planters usually need watering no more than once or twice a week by topping up the water reservoir, preventing over watering while the capillary matting soaks up excess rainwater. However, Amberol do advise some top watering where roots have not fully matured or are very near the top, as well as when setting up the planters for the first time. Checking the water level weekly is advised.

Providing the roots of floral displays

Steve explains: “Amberol’s one metre square planters were ideal for our use. The inclusion of the water reservoir helps to stabilise the plants making them less likely to dry out. This creates a secure flower-filled base for our pieces of art to be displayed to their best advantage. We used planters in a range of different colours, with or without the printed logo of our choice.”

Steve was also impressed with the ease of use and quality of the self-watering planters saying: “We like using Amberol’s products because they have a base that suits lifting with most forklift trucks. The water reservoir also makes maintenance much easier, as well as being good for the plants. It’s also a good sales feature for us to promote to our customers.”

In addition to Nottingham, Topiary Art Designs’ sculptures incorporating Amberol planters have gone to the Isle Of Man, Ipswich, Colchester, Leicester, Southend and many other UK towns, as well as to places as far away as the Mobile World Congress Show in Barcelona.

How Topiary Art Designs describe Amberol’s self-watering planters:

  1. Practical
  2. Easy to lift
  3. Well-designed

Amberol believe in listening carefully to customer feedback and will take on board comments to help improve and refine their products as Steve found. He comments:“The team at Amberol listened to early feedback on their planters and used this to make improvements to the products, making them the best we have been able to find for the jobs that we have.”

Steve also reports that the customer service from Amberol has been “Good to very good” and that he would be happy to recommend their products to other organisations as they satisfy a range of requirements.

Godalming is a historic market town in south west Surrey, 30 miles from London. Although the town hasn’t participated in this year’s Britain in Bloom, the council has organised its own ‘Floral Godalming’ event as it is important to residents, visitors and the local economy that floral displays are prominent and well-maintained in public areas.
