Pansies and violas in Pontefract

Pansies and violas in Pontefract

In September we blogged about planting in hanging baskets and containers to keep the beauty and colour of floral displays going into the autumn and beyond to cheer up the colder and darker days ahead. So, imagine how pleased we were when Pontefract in Bloom tweeted us to tell us they’d acted on one of our tips and had filled Amberol self-watering containers, including prominent town centre tiered planters with gorgeous autumnal pansies and violas.

Community spirit in action

Amberol are pleased to support the hard-working team at Pontefract in Bloom each year by supplying our self-watering planters featuring our unique Aquafeed ô system that cuts down on labour time by reducing the need for watering. Pontefract in Bloom do a great job of embodying the Britain in Bloom values of engaging the community as they work to make their historic market town a more attractive place for residents and visitors to West Yorkshire. Indeed, some of the flowers used in Pontefract’s autumn displays were grown at Thornes Park Nurseries by Day Opportunities, a local scheme set up to provide work experience opportunities for people with learning difficulties.

Year-round colour

As everyone involved in Britain in Bloom knows, the main focus of volunteer teams is on the summer months as after all, the judges’ visits have to coincide with when our native plants and flowers are at their stunning best in the warmer months. However, the efforts of the Pontefract in Bloom group show just how rewarding it can be to enhance the place they live by keeping the colour going all year round. The volunteers in Pontefract told us in their tweet that they gave their viola and pansy displays a good drink to ensure they bed in well, but thanks to Amberol’s self-watering Aquafeedô system, the hard work should now be over and all that remains is for everyone to enjoy the fruits of the team’s labour!

Keeping our public spaces tidy in 2019

Keeping our public spaces tidy in 2019

The dropping and non-segregation of litter on the streets of the UK continues to be an expensive problem for many councils. John Read, the founder of Clean Up Britain recently highlighted the problem of cash-strapped councils being forced to waste millions on clearing up litter. He said, “Councils are currently spending £800 million a year on clearing up litter, including £200, 000 spent by Warwick District Council, which is an obscene amount of wasted money when most councils are semi-bankrupt.”
