As one of the top performing sixth form colleges in the country, rated outstanding by Ofsted, The Sixth Form College in Farnborough is committed to building on its reputation as a centre of post-16 excellence. The College has around 3700 full time students aged 16-19, drawn from across Berkshire, Surrey and North East Hampshire.
In addition to academic excellence, the College places an emphasis on its grounds and buildings as an important part of creating a positive environment for learning. Instrumental in the ongoing drive to maintain and improve the College campus are the Amberol bins and self-watering containers which are used around the grounds.
The College currently use 30 Ample Bins which have a wide top opening with a self-locking swing lid and are designed for quick emptying. Head Groundsman Trevor Hopkins, who first came across Amberol’s products when working for Rushmoor Borough Council, explains how they have helped to reduce littering on the site.
“The bins are placed all over the College grounds, mainly near the doors. They have vastly improved the site, making it easy for our students to dispose of litter, keeping the site clean and tidy. The bins are able to accommodate a large amount of rubbish whilst still remaining stylish and enhancing their location.”
Trevor and his award-winning team (who received gold and category winner for Best Commercial Display and Landscaping, Rushmoor in Bloom 2014) also work hard on creating attractive floral displays around the site. The College has 25 tea cup and saucer hanging baskets, as well as several tiered fountain and wall mounted containers, all of which are self-watering to reduce maintenance.
“The planters have definitely improved the aesthetics of the place by adding colour and drawing the eye away from the brickwork,” comments Trevor. “The floral displays help promote a sense of pride in our College, whilst students and staff both benefit from having a more relaxed and pleasant environment to work and study in. We feel it creates a calmer and happier ethos and demonstrates that we value our environment. In fact, the displays are often a talking point for visitors.”
Trevor is more than happy to recommend Amberol’s bins and containers to other organisations. “The company offer a very friendly service and nothing is ever too much trouble. I have already recommended them several times over.”
Trevor concludes: “Amberol products have helped me to improve standards on our site and have motivated my grounds team to be more enthusiastic in their work. They have helped to raise the profile of the College and the team amongst other members of staff, visitors and the wider community. Many of our visitors comment on what a wonderful environment we have created here. A lot of that is down to the Amberol products - along with the hard work and dedication of the grounds staff.”
