Deadline approaches for container gardening entries at 2023 Chelsea Flower Show

The unprecedented lockdown restrictions put in place to tackle the Covid pandemic gave many people a new appreciation of gardens, greenery and open spaces. This in turn resulted in an upsurge in the number of container gardens, a trend recognised by organisers of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show who have included a competitive category for balcony and container gardens over the last two years.

This category is open to designers who have never previously exhibited or been involved in the design of a Chelsea Show garden. With applications due to close on 14th November, interested horticulturalists are urged to submit their entries as soon as possible.

Celebrating the landscape with planters

Last year’s gold medal winner was ‘The Still Garden’, designed by Jane Porter. Her garden was inspired by the Scottish landscape and incorporated plants found in the Highlands and islands. Other entries included a kitchen container garden with edible plants and trees, and a container garden which was designed to thrive in wet conditions.

Speaking about the 2022 Balcony and Container Garden entries, Helena Pettit, RHS Director of Gardens and Shows, commented: "The range of creative ideas is outstanding, and they dispel the myth that gardening is only for those with large outdoor areas or big budgets and provide ample inspiration for creating a little piece of greenery in whatever space you have.”

Greening spaces large and small

At Amberol we welcome the recognition of the value of growing plants in any location, and the acknowledgement that connecting with nature can take place anywhere. Some of the many advantages of container gardening include:

  • Flexibility – planters can be moved to different locations, both indoors and outdoors, and placed in shade or sun as required
  • Variety – planters come in all different shapes and sizes. The Amberol range of self-watering planters include Up-the-Pole planters and Hanging Baskets to add visual impact higher up, varying sizes of wood effect Barrels to suit different sized spaces, and Barrier Baskets to brighten up railings, fences and balconies.
  • Timely – gardening in a smaller space is more manageable and less time-consuming, especially if using self-watering planters to reduce the number of occasions that watering needs to take place to once or twice a week (at most)
  • Ideal conditions – it’s easier to reduce pest damage in planters as well as choosing the right location and compost for specific plants to thrive
  • Maximising potential for growth - Amberol self-watering planters create optimal conditions for growth by enabling plants access to water and nutrients as required

Plus, planting up a container or balcony garden is a great way of ensuring that most people have access to some greenery – which is so good for our mental health and wellbeing.
