Spotlight on Amberol customers in the national Britain in Bloom finals – Large towns and small cities

As we enter July, the national Britain in Bloom finalists are eagerly awaiting the judges’ visits – the first face-to-face judging to take place for two years, making it all the more special. We continue our focus on Amberol customers who have made the national final – in this blog we look at the Large Town and Small City categories.

Britain in Bloom - Large town

Congleton in Bloom

This active Cheshire group of volunteers has a long history of success in the Britain in Bloom competition, retaining a Gold status in 2021 and also winning Best Large Town in the North West. Congleton in Bloom aims to make the town a greener and more attractive place to live, work and visit, recognising how important this is to tourism, retail and the local economy. The group’s work includes litter picks and planting displays around the town as well as running campaigns to raise awareness around the importance of keeping the town looking its best. Community is an important part of Congleton in Bloom’s work and the group work hard to involve different sectors of their local community, including young people through the Eco Schools project.

Portishead in Bloom

Set up in 1996, Portishead in Bloom has been entering the South West in Bloom competition for 26 years, winning Gold every year since 2008. The group have also received the coveted Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Members of Portishead in Bloom work hard around the town planting beds, tubs and baskets. They also grow edible plants which can be picked and used by members of the community. This year, poppies and foxgloves were used to create some stunning displays. The group’s Amberol tiered planter, put in place for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and filled with red, white and blue petunias is sure to be used to great effect to impress the judges.

Mirfield in Bloom

Llike so many In Bloomers, this West Yorkshire based group is all about community, with the mission of “Pulling the community together to make our townsfolk love where they live”. As they say, In Bloom is about people just as much as flowers. Another worthy recipient of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, Mirfield hold regular litter picks and street cleans. They have also set up a community flower bed in the town with plants donated from various sources and with support from the Community Payback scheme.

Farnham in Bloom

Working alongside Farnham Town Council, the Farnham in Bloom group has entered five categories in this year’s South and South East in Bloom (S&SEiB) as well as making the finals of the national competition. They have a long and successful In Bloom history, including achieving Gold in the S&SEiB Large Town category eight times. Initiatives include an annual Secret Garden competition and various competitions and events for schools which include a quest to find the tallest sunflower and the biggest pumpkin! The group also fund their purchases of plants and equipment by inviting local businesses to sponsor Amberol self-watering planters and hanging baskets – a scheme that has proven very popular.

Prestatyn in Bloom

This Denbighshire town works closely with the council, recognising the significant impact that the town’s appearance has on the local economy and investment. They believe that In Bloom has a role to play in making the area look its best, not just for residents to enjoy, but also to encourage visitors to the town. The group pay tribute to the support that they receive from all sectors of the community and believe that Britain in Bloom is crucial in fostering a sense of civic pride and community. Projects include creating gardens outside different community centres as well as developing a 14 hectare community woodland area and the Prestatyn in Bloom gardens which transformed an overgrown area into a large planted bed.

Britain in Bloom - Small city

Rochdale in Bloom

Set up in 2010, Rochdale in Bloom’s mission is to reduce the divide in social infrastructure and to create a greener environment for residents and visitors. Working with the metropolitan borough council, the group aims to involve diverse sectors of the community with people of all ages and backgrounds. Areas that the group work on include the Rochdale Memorial Gardens, around the Town Hall and Broadfield Park. Growing edible plants is also encouraged with community allotments used by local schools and resident groups. In addition, the development of an Outdoor Learning Centre transformed a neglected place into an important educational facility, enhancing bio-diversity in the space.

Bath in Bloom

The very first winner of Britain in Bloom back in 1964, Bath in Bloom has a long and happy history in the competition and its members work hard to involve the community across the city. Bath in Bloom run a local gardening competition to encourage amateur gardeners, while recent projects include giving a local community garden a makeover, tree planting sessions and planting up beautiful floral displays around a new seating area. The group work all year round planting, tidying, restoring and maintaining and have a range of community initiatives to encourages participation, from Grow Your Own projects to business sponsorship schemes.
