Join the war against litter with the Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean is back this month for the seventh consecutive year. The annual campaign, which is organised by Keep Britain Tidy, was delayed last year, taking place in late May and June, but is back in its usual springtime slot for 2022.

This year’s event runs from 25th March to 10th April and includes the great Big School Clean, a campaign designed to raise awareness amongst young people and to encourage them to dispose of their litter responsibly.

How can you help?

This year, litter picks will be taking place across the UK as usual, with members of the public encouraged to pledge to collect bags of litter as part of the #BigBagChallenge. At the time of writing, over 92,000 bags have been pledged.

The Great British Spring Clean is the UK’s largest mass action environmental campaign involving numerous organisations across communities such as schools and businesses as well as individuals. The message of the initiative is clear: every individual can make a difference; and when we join together, that difference is significant. For example, it is estimated that if every child who attends school in the UK pledges to pick up just one bag of litter during the Great Big School Clean, we could remove 10.3 million bags of litter from the natural environment.

Keeping safe

Although Great British Spring Clean events have been impacted by the pandemic over the last two years, the campaign has steadily grown in popularity and reputation since its inception in 2015. With health and safety in mind, participants are reminded to continue to adhere to Covid-19 safety guidelines and to ensure good hygiene through handwashing, the use of litter pickers, hand sanitiser, gloves etc. Some local authorities are able to lend litter picking equipment or it can also be bought directly from Keep Britain Tidy.

Raising awareness amongst children and young people

Educating the public and clear messaging is a key part of a successful litter strategy, and these good habitats are best started early. As a result, this year’s campaign is enlisting the help of eco-journalist and children's author Sarah Roberts to help raise awareness around the damage that litter can do. Every school or nursery who make a pledge will be invited to join an Eco-Schools live assembly for a reading of her new book, Somebody Crunched Colin.

Participating schools will also go into a prize draw. Primary schools could win a goody bag containing 35 signed copies of Somebody Crunched Colin and a signed copy of Sarah's book, Somebody Swallowed Stanley as well as a copy of Somebody Crunched Colin for the school library. Meanwhile, secondary schools could win a live (or virtual if necessary) assembly with Sarah to talk about the impact of litter on wildlife.

Improving litter disposal with Amberol’s animal bins

Amberol’s animal bins are particularly popular with younger people and can be found on school sites as well as in parks, playgrounds and at theme parks. The bird bins can be customised to look like different species such as chicks, robins or penguins for example, while the Ambere bear bins are always a big hit with children – and many adults as well.

Both designs have:

  • Lockable front opening doors
  • Easy to empty inner liners
  • A 90 litre capacity

The bird bins stand 1.23 metres high, and the bear bins are 1.26 metres high. Some customers make their animal bins even more appealing by adding a voice box to record a customised message to thank people every time they deposit litter.

The right bin for your needs

Amberol’s animal bins are just part of a range of litter bins that includes dual recycling bins, banks of bins, indoor and outdoor bins, wall mounted bins and coffee cup bins. All Amberol bins are made from robust recyclable polyethylene and are available in a wide range of colours with bespoke WRAP approved signage.
