Planting super spring bulbs

Planting super spring bulbs

When it comes to planting bulbs, autumn is the time to do it. Planting around this time gives them enough time to produce strong roots before winter hits. So, as we are now well into the autumn, it’s time to put on those gardening gloves before the first frost arrives.

Tips for planting bulbs

  • First things first, you need to find the right place to plant. Containers are ideal and offer a sheltered space to grow beautiful spring bulbs.
  • To develop roots, this place needs to be cool – if it is too hot they will flower too soon, way before enough roots have been formed to support their growth. They should be kept in these cool conditions for around two months. After this stage, most hardy bulbs – including tulips and daffodils – prefer a warm, sunny site with good drainage as they come from areas with dry summer climates. Because Amberol’s self-watering planters are double walled, they offer great insulation and protection from extremes of heat and cold.
  • During the cooling stage, stimulate the effect of winter by placing containers or pots in a cool, dark place or sheltered spot. During this 8 to 14 week stage the bulbs are growing roots. It can be difficult to find a dark space for all bulbs that you want to plant so as long as they are well covered with compost, a shady spot will do nearly as good a job.
  • To root well, the bulbs must be amply watered. Too wet and the bulbs will rot, but too dry and they will not root properly. It’s recommended to soak the bulbs when they are first planted. When the compost begins to look dry again – which could be up to several weeks away – see if the soil beneath is dry and, if so, soak again. If using Amberol’s self-watering containers, you can be confident that your bulbs will get the optimal amount of water to ensure better growth.
