Litter can be a significant problem for many schools across the country. Not only does it create an unfavourable impression for residents and visitors, it can be demoralising for staff and students – and can also be a safety hazard. Furthermore, all state funded schools have a legal responsibility to take steps to contain littering and can be fined up to £2,500 per day if they fail to address the issue.
However, a college in Hampshire has taken action to make littering a thing of the past. Over the past three years, The Sixth Form College in Farnborough (www.farnborough.ac.uk) has invested in 40 Amberol Ample bins which are located all around the College grounds.
Ample Bins have a wide top opening with a self-locking swing lid and are designed for quick emptying. They have proved highly effective in the College’s bid to reduce littering around the site by making it easier for students to dispose of their rubbish at many different locations.
Ground staff at The Sixth Form College have worked hard to create and maintain attractive grounds for students, staff and visitors to enjoy. The College won the award for Best Commercial Display and Landscaping for Rushmoor in Bloom in 2014 and 2015. In addition to the Ample Bins, the College grounds are home to numerous Amberol self-watering containers, from tea cup and saucer hanging baskets to tiered fountain planters.
“We invest a lot of time and effort in making the College grounds a pleasant environment and so it seemed sensible to invest in plenty of high quality litter bins to ensure that the grounds stayed clean and tidy,” comments Head Groundsman Trevor Hopkins.
