Grant funding available for local authorities and community organisations to improve access to green space

Everyone knows the benefits that come with having access to nature on our doorstep. Whether it’s a play park, community garden or woodland, local green spaces offer a respite for current and future generations to enjoy.

For those who live in urban areas, things could be better. Recent data shows that 87% of urban households in England (over 56 million people) don’t have access to green space within a 5-minute walk from their home.

Nature Towns and Cities is a new initiative set up by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Trust and Natural England and aims to help 100 places across the UK improve access to green space in urban areas. £15m funding is now available to local authorities and community organisations.

The deadline is 12pm on 12th November 2024, so apply soon!

Who can apply?

Grant funding is available across the UK for:

  • Local authorities and the public sector
  • Voluntary and community organisations

What does the Nature Towns and Cities grant offer?

There will be one round of funding with grants available from £250,000 up to £1m.

All funded projects will be supported by a network of experts from the partner organisations, providing free advice on topics such as green infrastructure planning, community engagement and green finance.

Does my project qualify for funding?

The Heritage Fund wants to fund projects focused on capacity building that will enable local authorities and their partners to put public green spaces like parks, linear walks, nature sites and community gardens at the heart of their thinking to realise the benefits for health, prosperity, heritage, nature and local pride.

How do I apply?

For Heritage Fund applications over £250k, the first step is to submit an Expression of Interest form with details of your project.

Your application should identify what resources or support you will need. For example: additional expertise to engage local communities, develop partnerships or unlock new investment.

When is the deadline?

Submit your Expressions of Interest until 12pm on 12th November 2024.

If your initial proposal is successful, you will be invited to submit a full application between 16th December 2024 and 7th March 2025.
